The collaboration
between La Banca della Calce and the Oasis Wwf La Malcontenta and the Wolf has been going on for several years. The farmhouses that are part of the Oasis have been renovated thanks to the materials and support of this organization, which is involved in sustainable construction.

The Oasis La Malcontenta and the Wolf deeply believes in the importance of spreading a building culture that goes in the direction of respect for workers and for the environment.

Today unfortunately, often, in the construction field, we are faced with a loss of knowledge of the use of traditional techniques of construction. Effective techniques and solid materials: stone, iron, wood, terracotta, lime. An art of building that could last over time and without all the risks associated with handling the materials that are almost always used in today's construction (rock wool, glass wool, glues, silicones, paints with synthetic polymers, etc.).

The Oasi La Malcontenta e il Lupo aims to promote awareness in the field of construction.

The Banca della Calce moves with passion among materials of ancient origins and innovation using, in addition to lime, also hemp. In this regard, since 2012, it has developed CalceCanapa Termointonaco, the first sustainable building product made from the union of magnesian lime putty and geomineralized hemp shiv.

Here at the WWF Oasi La Malcontenta e il Lupo we have managed to start a process of in-depth study, dissemination and research that we hope will last as long as possible, and which has been made possible also thanks to the technicians and workers involved in the restoration of the farmhouses.

Unfortunately, in much of Italy we are still faced with a paradoxical situation, where most technical offices and construction companies never talk to clients about the possibility of lime masonry, in fact, they are afraid of it. And so, one of the materials that should be at the foundation of construction history, lime, is now being set aside.

Today, talking to a construction company about lime masonry, laying a fresh floor, or painting with lime putty is extremely difficult. Generally speaking, discussing the use of non-toxic products, which are therefore not those in common use, becomes an undertaking that rarely leads to the start of a construction site.

For this I must acknowledge that at Oasi La Malcontenta e il Lupo we instead found people open to dialogue, who had the courage to get involved, and the courage to start building “like in the old days” again. And this was also thanks to the support of the Italian Lime Forum and of Dr. Andrea Rattazzi, President of the Forum (the leading international association in the world of lime).

The Pizzichini studio and the Spadini Piero construction company, supported by the Spadini Luca and Il Casale companies, got their hands “dirty” with lime: they insulated the farmhouses, painted them, laid the floors, did masonry work and created a beautiful Venetian stucco, showing imagination and resourcefulness.

We hope that many others can follow their example and that we will soon return to healthier, safer, and more resilient construction for everyone.
